History of the dish
There is no clear story about the origin of moqueca, however, various theories have been proposed.
Noting that many of them end up coinciding in several parts, so, after gathering various fragments from different versions, we could piece together an unconfirmed context, but one that gives an idea of how things happened.
First of all, and to the disappointment of many, the specific year or century does not come up in any version, but the era does: indigenous.
This was the time when the inhabitants ate only the foods they found, such as crops, certain seasonings, and of course, fish.
This last element was very important in the diet of Brazilian natives, as it allowed them to expand their gastronomic repertoire.
And of course, they obtained the protagonist of today: the first version of moqueca, which was made with leaves from some trees, covering the fish, which was mixed with onion and cilantro.
Later, with the arrival of Europeans and the many changes they brought, the addition of foods from the Old Continent to those of America was also achieved.
Thanks to that, many native dishes like moquecas were improved.
